Septic alarm repair, floats & control panels

The alarm on a pumped septic system tells you the water in the pump chamber has risen above its normal level. It is a warning that the pump, the float or the power is not doing its job, and it gives you time to act before sewage backs up.

Testing the control panel behind a septic alarm: a red beacon light on top and an open panel with a clamp meter reading the wiring
Testing the control panel behind a septic alarm. The red beacon is on top, and a clamp meter is reading the wiring inside the panel.

An alarm that never sounds is just as important. A dead panel, a failed bulb or a disconnected float means the warning will not come when you need it. We test the whole alarm circuit and replace the part that failed.

Why your septic alarm is going off

  • The alarm is sounding or the beacon light is on
  • The panel is dark, or you silenced it long ago and never found the cause
  • The alarm sounds after heavy rain or a large laundry day
  • The panel has no test button, or the test does nothing
  • The system has a pump but you have never seen an alarm panel
  • Repeated high-water alarms
  • A pump that will not start or stop

Septic floats & control panels

A high-water alarm does not always mean the pump has failed. A stuck float, a control fault, a tripped breaker or a blocked discharge line can all look the same from the house.

We test each float and its on, off and alarm levels, check the panel and the pump cycle, and replace the part that failed. Hard-wired panel work is done by a licensed electrician.

  • Go over the alarm history, panel and system records
  • Check each float and its on, off and alarm levels
  • Test the pump cycle and the alarm circuit
  • Replace failed floats, alarms and controls with compatible parts
  • Bring in a licensed electrician for hard-wired panel work
  • Give you a written record of what we checked and changed

  • Show you how to silence, test and reset your panel
Need alarms, floats & panels?Free quote · 3-year parts warranty · 24/7 emergency line

Warranty. Pumps, level sensors and other parts we supply carry a 3-year limited parts warranty from the day they are installed, matching the manufacturer warranty. If a covered part fails because of a defect in materials or workmanship, it is repaired or replaced at no charge. The warranty covers parts only: labour to diagnose, remove and install is billed at our normal rates. It does not cover damage from flooding, lightning or power surges, freezing, roots, vehicles driven over the system, sand or gravel, grease, wipes or other things that should not go down a drain, or work on the system by anyone else. Full terms are on our warranty page.

Safety first. When the alarm sounds, cut back on water use right away: no laundry, no dishwasher, short showers. Do not open the tank or pump chamber. Call us and describe what the panel and the pump are doing.

Septic alarm repair cost: what changes the price

  • Whether the issue is the alarm, float, control circuit or another system component

You get the price before we start.

Before you call about a septic alarm

  • Describe the light or sound and when it started
  • Mention a power outage, unusual water use or recent service

Septic alarm questions

My alarm is beeping. What should I do first?

Silence it using the panel button if there is one, stop using water where you can, and check that the breaker for the pump has not tripped. If the alarm returns, call us.

Can I just turn the alarm off?

You can silence it, but the water level is still high. Silencing an alarm without finding the cause is how small pump failures turn into backups.

Should the alarm be tested?

Yes. Most panels have a test button. Pressing it a few times a year confirms the buzzer and light work.

Can a float be replaced without replacing the pump?

Sometimes. A faulty or obstructed float can cause a pump-control problem even when the pump itself is working. Diagnose the cause before replacing components.

Do you replace or repair control panels?

We diagnose panel faults as part of the visit and replace alarms and plug-in controls. Hard-wired panel replacement is done by a licensed electrician, and we coordinate it with you.

Can you adjust the pump dosing settings?

Settings should follow the system design and maintenance instructions. Changing a timer to silence an alarm can hide a capacity, pump or field problem.
